Naples, Herculaneum

Board your coach for a scenic 45-minute bus ride to Herculaneum, where you will step back in time to explore this ancient city. Founded around the 4th century BC, Herculaneum mirrored Naples in its geometric layout, featuring east-west "decumano" (main streets) and north-south "cardines" (narrower streets). Unlike Pompeii, which feels as if its 5,000 residents departed just moments before the eruption, Herculaneum exudes a distinct atmosphere. Though smaller, Herculaneum is better preserved because, while Pompeii's wood was destroyed by hot ashes, Herculaneum was enveloped by hot mud that shielded its buildings. This has preserved its marble floors, mosaics, paintings, and carbonized wood. Explore its opulent properties, including the House of the Mosaic, the House of Deer, the Thermae (baths), and the House of Carbonized Furniture. After your guided tour, return to meet the yacht. Mt. Etna, a very active volcano, is the largest volcano in Europe at 10,723 feet and has erupted 130 times. Of great interest is the variety of landscapes and vegetation that can be found on the volcano's slopes. Your drive to Mt. Etna is along a coastal highway and through a fertile paradise of green vineyards and golden citrus groves, passing through villages such as Santa Venerina and Zafferana Etnea. The scenery becomes more forbidding as you approach the Sapienza Refuge. You will see the city of Catania, overwhelmed by an eruption 300 years ago, and walk around Crateri Silvestri inspecting the lava flow from the eruption of 1983. These small craters are set amid bare fields of grey lava that stretch for miles. You will have free time to explore on your own and light refreshments before driving back to the pier. Messina, In the Steps of the Godfather

Leaving the pier by coach, you will begin with a brief drive through Messina for a 45-minute trip via the freeway and then motor along the coastal road bordered by villas, flowering gardens, and picturesque villages to reach Savoca. Its scenic beauty and historical-artistic heritage makes Savoca, one of the most attractive and unknown places of Taormina. Kotor, Highlights of Kotor Bay & Baroque Village of Perast

Your excursion begins with a 30-minute drive to the small Baroque village of Perast for a walking tour in this pedestrian only village. See the Cathedral of St. Nicholas and other monuments including the Parish Church, the 12th century Sveti Djordje Church, and the Sveti Nikola Church, built between the 15th and 17th centuries. In a local restaurant, you'll taste some typical sweets, made from an original recipe used during the Baroque period. You will have some free time before boarding a private motor boat to Gospa od Skrpjela, a Baroque-style church situated on one of two islets in the bay of Kotor, across from Perast. The islet is man made, and its original church was built in 1452. You'll view the stunning present church, Our Lady of the Rocks, built in 1632, and enlarged in 1722. You'll see 68 magnificent paintings by Tripo Kokolja, a famous 17th century Baroque artist from Perast whose most important painting, The Death of the Virgin, is nearly 33 feet long. Zadar, Flavors & Sights of Zadar

Your tour will begin on the pier and soon you will find yourself in the heart of this magnificent Old Town. This walking tour includes a visit to the Cathedral of St. Anastasia, the finest example of Romanesque architecture in Zadar and built in 1324. It is dedicated to St. Anastasia, whose stone sarcophagus is in the apse to the left of the high altar. Further on your way you will pass close to the Church of St. Donatus which is believed to have been built at the beginning of the 9th century. It is circular in plan, with three naves. You will visit the 16th century St Mary Church with a Romanesque bell-tower built at the beginning of the 12th century. On the upper floor of the convent, open to the public are rooms containing a collection of goldsmith's work, relics and other valuable items. Your tour will end with a Marascino Liqueur Tasting. Liqueur production in Zadar is almost 400 years old. This liqueur is a bittersweet, clear liqueur flavored with Marasca cherries, which are grown in Dalmatia, Croatia, mostly around the city of Zadar. Honey is also part of the ancient recipe. The recipe for this liqueur was created by the apothecaries of the Dominican monastery at Zara, now Zadar, in Dalmatia, at the beginning of the 16th century. Venice, Islands of Venetian Lagoon - Murano & Burano

Venice is composed of more than 100 tiny islets, packed closely together around canals. Venice city is in a lagoon, protected from the sea by a long strip of land. Today you will visit two islands-Murano and Burano. In 1291, when furnaces were banned from Venice as a fire precaution, the manufacturers of fine glassware were transferred to Murano. Glassware was one of the few Venetian exports and as such, the secrets of this skillful craft were tightly guarded. Today, the Murano products of blown-glass mirrors, chandeliers, goblets and intricate works of art are renowned worldwide. There will be time for a visit to one of the many glassblowing workshops and for shopping. The island of Burano has brightly painted houses decorating this small and cheerful fishing village. Burano is well known for its lace-making. In the 16th century, the lace industry was at its peak, and Burano was cited throughout Europe for producing the finest lace.
