Opatija, Concierge Collection: On the Trail of Truffles *

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 1.5-hour drive to the Village of Vrh , which overlooks Lake Butoniga. Upon arrival, proceed for a visit to the home of the Karlic family, who originated the tradition of truffle-hunting in Istria. Your visit will begin with a tasting of wonderful truffle products, such as cheese with truffles and perhaps truffle biscuits. Next, leave the Karlic's home and head downhill, led by specially trained dogs, to the famous Motovun Forest to experience the adventure of hunting for black and precious white truffles. After an approximately 75-minute search for these treasured delicacies of the woodlands, return to the Karlic's home to learn how to prepare a delicacy with truffles. You will have a tasting of local wine, cheese and truffles, flavored honey, paté, and other truffle specialities served by your friendly hosts. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the drive back to the pier via central Istria and Ucka Mountain. Please note : This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 0.6 miles (about 1 kilometer), at times over uneven, gravel, and cobblestone surfaces and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and at the sites visited. Opatija, Kamacnik Canyon Hike *

Aboard your motor coach, enjoy the scenic 75-minute journey to Gorski Kotar in the Vrbovsko area , where your hiking adventure reveals the picturesque world of Kamacnik Canyon . Situated at the entrance to the canyon is an old sawmill, today a restaurant, that tells a special story about the region's past and complements the bucolic scene. From this starting point,you will trek the approximately 2-mile trail leading to the Kamacnik spring. Along the way, you will be surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature, at points walking next to the creek and crossing wooden bridges, at times more challenging, the trail will curve its way across small rapids or span over the water's edge with a sturdy, trestle-like construction. The path makes its way to a verdant valley, a truly lovely scene. At the end of the hike you will enjoy a tasty meal of venison ham, deer sausage, smoked cheese, homemade bread and blueberry strudel in a charming bistro before heading back to Opatija. Opatija, Sights of Rijeka & Trsat View Point *

Depart the pier for the scenic, 30-minute drive to Trsat , the oldest part of Rijeka Town. Begin your guided walking tour. Along the way, visit the Gradina Fortress and Trsat Castle , which dates from prehistoric times when it was just a watchtower. Nearby is the Franciscan Monastery and Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat, one of the oldest in Croatia. For 7 centuries, this shrine has been frequented by numerous pilgrims from all around the world. The shrine and Franciscan Monastery are also connected with Rijeka's city center by a total of 561 steps made in the 16th century. Next, re-board your coach and return to Rijeka's city center for a guided walking tour. Your first stop is at the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral , one of the most important meeting places of culture in Rijeka City for the last 4 decades. The building itself is a monument, as it formerly served as the Governor's Palace. After the museum visit, your guided stroll will continue downhill to the main Korzo Promenade. Walk across the promenade and view the Cathedral, City Tower, Old Town with its narrow streets, marketplace, and various other sites in the city center. Following your guided walking tour, some free time is made available to explore your surrounds at your leisure. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and drive back to the pier. Please note : This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 0.9 miles (about 1.5 kilometers), at times over uneven, gravel, and cobblestone surfaces and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, 10 steps in Rijeka and 25 steps in Trsat. Departing Opatija, enjoy in scenic 60-minute ride over Ucka Mountain to Istra Peninsula & Town of Buzet . Known as the City of Truffles, Buzet is the crown of Istria. It is situated on a hill above the eternal green Mirna River, from which it overlooks hundreds of small stone town villages that for centuries have been connected to old Buzet. This is the magic territory of Istrian truffles, the buried treasures and culinary king of white and black pearls. The Buzet area is also the place for great olive oil, exquisite wines and distinctive Istrian grappa which, served with traditional Istrian culinary recipes, fully evokes the spirit of this ancient region. Take an uphill walk to the Hilltop Town of Buzet for guided exploration and some free time before proceeding to Aura Tasting House . The company 'Aura' produces exclusive traditional products such as brandies, jams, and other products made of wild herbs and wild fruits picked in an ecologically clean environment on the slopes of the Cicarija Mountain far from roads and inhabited settlements. Aura production includes interesting delicacies ranging from jams made of nettle, mint, dandelion, sage, elder, fig, plum or cornel besides brandies aging for 3 years, then 6 months in maceration, then settling and being distilled for the next 2.5 years up to 6 times in order to naturally get rid of the sediment. Beside the traditional Biska, Medica and Teranino, they produce brandies made of sage, mint, cornel, carob, olives and almond, wild pear, wild apple, rose petals, hip, forest fruit, Travarica and Biska extra; the latter is not to be omitted since they are the only ones to produce it on the market; it is produced from white mistletoe picked exclusively from the apple tree. Then there is also the Millefrutti barrique brandy. After this unique delicious tasting rejoin your motorcoach for the return ride back to Opatija. As with the other castles on the island, Vrbnik too is, situated high up, at almost 164 feet (50 meters) on a cliff that literally dives into the sea. Today the most important product of Vrbnik's fields and of Vrbnik in general, is its golden yellow wine - the Žlahtina; which has become famous even in wider Croatian circles. With its rich history, Vrbnik is known as the cradle of Croatian literacy and it is surely one of the oldest villages on the island of Krk. Narrow streets prevail in Vrbnik, so it is not strange that the world's narrowest street should be located exactly here. Blaž Baromic was the founder of the first famous Croatian printing-house in Senj, through which he greatly contributed to Croatia's cultural heritage. Piran, Slovenian Coast & Farmers Market

This tour is all about traditional ways of life, and giving something back to the community. Not only will you be mixing with the locals but you'll be helping them maintain their way of life. You will board your motor coach for the 15-minute drive to the lovely seafront town of Izola - an old fishing town on the Adriatic Coast. Your guide will take you on a 60-minute tour of the town before continuing on to head inland on a panoramic 30-minute drive to a small Istrian village. Your guide will take you on a walking tour and at the weekly market the farmers will be on hand to show you their traditional recipes and home-made products. At the market, you'll be given a booklet with 5 vouchers and you will have 45 minutes to exchange these vouchers with the vendors to taste their goods. Everything from fruit juice to wine, cakes to cookies are there for you to try. There's even some locally made ceramics, perfect to buy as a souvenir. The vouchers you use in exchange for tastings are like a payment and go towards maintaining the village life. Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes. Wheelchairs can only be accommodated if arrangements are made in advance. There are 20 steps at the Farmer's Market.

Piran, Lake Bled with Island

Lake Bled has attracted numerous visitors for centuries, with its immense natural beauty, hot springs and serene climate. Beautiful hotels, walking paths, tennis and golf courses, a casino, rowing regattas and nearby natural and cultural sites are only a few of the reasons that this has become a popular place for both tourists and locals. You will depart the pier for a scenic 2-hour drive towards Bled, where upon arrival you will board a boat for a cruise of the Lake and a visit to its famous island which is situated in the middle. Landing at the island, one of the sites you will visit is the "Wish Bell," certainly the most significant point of interest for visitors since the Middle Ages. The Bell hangs from the tower on top of the chapel roof. According to popular legend, a young widow who lived at Bled Castle mourned her husband who had been killed by brigands and gathered all her gold and silver and had a bell cast for the chapel on Bled Island. When the bell was being transported to the island, a terrible storm caused the boat to overturn, drowning the sailors and sinking the bell to the bottom of the lake. The young widow, now even more devastated, entered a convent. After her death, the Pope donated another bell for the Bled Church. Legend has it that those who ring the bell to honor her and make a wish will see their wish come true. From here you will continue to the lunch venue, where you will enjoy your meal with a nice view over the lake before having some free time to explore Lake Bled on your own. Piran, Skocjan Cave - UNESCO

Enjoy your day exploring the UNESCO site of Skocjan Caves , rich in importance for the region and powerful in their beauty. You will take a 45-minute drive to the caves where there will be time to use the restroom before entering the caves. The walk in the caves will take 2 hours, during which you will admire the beautiful Reka River and limestone formations. The Skocjan Caves are a unique natural phenomenon, the creation of the Reka River. The Reka River springs from below the Snežnik plateau and flows some 34 miles on the surface. After reaching the Karst, the limestone surface, the river not only deepens its riverbed through erosion, but also by means of corrosion - it dissolves the limestone. After the visit you will be take a short drive to an organic tourist farm and be treated to traditional homemade local and seasonal produce, dry cuts, organic juice and dessert. You will then have a 45-minute drive back to the pier. Please note: The visit of the cave involves 2 hours of walking over uneven surface, with spots of high altitude. Wear comfortable walking shoes and a jacket due to the temperature in the cave.
