This tour provides highlights of Messina's historical city center. Begin your guided walking tour with a walk along one of the city's most important streets, Via Garibaldi. This ancient thoroughfare is packed with historic sites and remarkable buildings. You'll see the Town Hall and admire Catalani's Church. The church is a jewel of Arab-Norman architecture that, amazingly, has withstood the onslaught of the 1908 earthquake and two world wars. Taste a typical Sicilian granita at a local bar and enjoy some free time for shopping. Next, proceed to Cathedral Square, where you will visit the Treasury. This repository contains the beautiful Madonna golden mantle, as well as a collection of important historical artwork donated by kings, bishops, noblemen and even local people as a token of faith and thanksgiving. You'll also step inside Messina's famous cathedral, almost entirely rebuilt after the earthquake of 1908. It features an interesting finely carved 15 th to 16 th century central doorway. The stately bell tower, 100 feet tall, holds the largest astronomical clock in the world. Its animated, mechanical statues are only seen at noon. And don't miss the Orion Fountain in Cathedral Square, adjacent to the duomo. Built in 1547, its polygonal basin portrays Orion - one of the legendary founders of Messina. A one-hour drive brings you to the outskirts of this picturesque site which was founded in the 3rd century B.C. Although almost completely renovated by the Romans, it now reflects a medieval character that is truly captivating. After arriving near Taormina's center, your guide will accompany you on a walking tour along cobblestone streets to Palazzo Corvaja , a 15th century building whose arched windows and doorways reflect its strong Arabic influence. Next, you will stroll to the 3rd century Greco-Roman Theater , spectacularly situated overlooking Mount Etna and Naxos Bay. Renowned for its expansive size and unique acoustic qualities, it is still used for open-air concerts. After free time to stroll or shop along the famous Corso Umberto, you will rejoin the coach for the 60-minute journey back to the yacht. Please note : Buses are not permitted to enter the town of Taormina. Guests will get to the city center from the parking lot by lifts. Keep in mind that Taormina can be very crowded.
