Da Nang, My Son Heritage Site
Da Nang, My Son Heritage Site
Nestled in a lush valley and surrounded by the Hon Quap Mountains, My Son is a stunning archaeological site that was once a Holy Land built in the 4th century. It served as the most important religious and intellectual center of the Champa kingdom, which thrived between the 2nd and 15th centuries. The site, with its towers rising dramatically out of the thick jungle and cut through by clear streams, reflects nine centuries of occupation. Through extensive trade relations with India, the Cham adopted Hinduism and Sanskrit, shaping their sacred culture. The Cham people, lacking agricultural land, relied on piracy and trade, often engaging in wars with the Vietnamese to the north and the Khmers to the west. My Son is considered the Champa culture's equivalent to other grand, Indian-influenced cities in Asia, such as Angkor in Cambodia, Bagan in Myanmar, Ayutthaya in Thailand, and Borobudur in Java. The Cham are best known for their brick sanctuaries, the Cham Towers and temples dedicated to their kings and various divinities, adorned with intricate carvings. Though heavily damaged by time and the Vietnam War, My Son is slowly being restored, and the remaining monuments evoke a sense of awe and contemplation, standing as striking reminders of this ancient culture.

Here, you'll enjoy a 45-minute walk around this historic site, where the five peaks represent the five elements of feng shui. During the Cham period, this marble ridge was a Hindu sanctuary, and later, Vietnamese Buddhists built pagodas dedicated to Buddha and Confucius. Today, Buddhist shrines occupy several mountain caves, some of which were bombed during the war. The tour concludes with a visit to the Linh Ung Pagoda, where you'll see a towering Lady Buddha statue facing the sea before returning to the ship.
