During our complimentary Destination Discovery Event: Sagas & Songs at the Blue Church, offered on this and select other voyages, you’ll get a rare insider’s look at both local landmarks and the culture of this small Icelandic community.

Located in the East Fjords between steep mountains, the settlement grew up in the late 1800s around the Norwegian herring fishery. Many of the colorful old timbered houses were imported from Norway by wealthy merchants and whalers. Perhaps the most remarkable building, though, is the Blue Church.

With clean, Scandinavian lines and a beautiful glacier blue color, the church is one of Iceland’s most recognizable landmarks. It was moved or rebuilt a few times over the years before finding its permanent home in Seydisfjordur in 1922. (Sometimes intentionally and sometimes at the whim of Mother Nature, through storms and fire.) Leading up to the church is the vibrantly colored Rainbow Street presenting a scene worthy of a fairytale.

Beautiful Grundarfjordur is located between a mountain range and the sea.  The road nearby crosses a lava field that is partially warm so snow does not always stick there. The main attraction of the area is Snæfellsjokull National Park full of regal glaciers, lava fields, waterfalls, caves, calderas, and basalt cliffs. The peninsula there received the EARTHCHECK Sustainable Community Award in 2010, the first area in Iceland to win such an award.

Husavík was the first place in Iceland to be settled by a Norseman and is a fishing, tourist and popular whale watching center, where many species of whales can be seen including minke whale, humpback whale and blue whale, harbor porpoise, and white-beaked dolphin. Seydisfjord is 11 miles of long, narrow, beautiful waterway surrounded by high mountains that ends at the town of Seydisfjordur, known for its old multi-colored wooden buildings and cascading waterfalls even in the town.  This is home of the Skalanes Nature Reserve with its wide variety of wildlife including more than 45 bird species.  The first high-voltage electricity in Iceland was opened here in 1913 and is still in operation today. A popular hiking path starts at the town center, following the east bank of the Fjardara River that flows through the center of town.

Reykjavik: Panoramic Reykjavik & Viking History with Transfer to Airport

This classic city tour takes in all the highlights of Reykjavík. Your journey will begin with a drive through Laugardalur ("Warm Water Valley") where you will pass one of the most popular outdoor geothermal swimming pools . From there the road will lead you to drive past the open-air museum at Árbær . You will, then cross the Ellidaá River, one of the world's cleanest salmon rivers. Eventually you will reach Álftanes Peninsula where the President's residence, is located. Returning to the city you will drive to Perlan, The Pearl with its viewing deck that offers great panoramic views over Reykjavik. You will head towards Hallgrímskirkja, the church that dominates the city skyline with its imposing tower, then drive through the charming old quarter of Reykjavik with its colorful wooden houses and narrow streets, past the University of Iceland complex and along the city pond, Tjörnin. Then you'll reach the old harbor where you'll make a quick stop. Beautiful Grundarfjordur is located between a mountain range and the sea.  The road nearby crosses a lava field that is partially warm so snow does not always stick there. The main attraction of the area is Snæfellsjokull National Park full of regal glaciers, lava fields, waterfalls, caves, calderas, and basalt cliffs. The peninsula there received the EARTHCHECK Sustainable Community Award in 2010, the first area in Iceland to win such an award.

Grundarfjordur: Wonders of the West

This full sweep of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula takes in its greatest landmarks in a single, well-paced day. The tour begins with a quick stop at Kirkjufell — Iceland's most photographed mountain, its distinctive peak rising straight from the sea — before heading west along the peninsula. A visit to the black church at Búðir is followed by time in Arnarstapi, where an optional coastal walk leads to the towering stone arch and the statue of the legendary guardian Bárður. Grundarfjordur: A Journey to the Center of the Earth

Jules Verne chose Snæfellsjökull as the entrance to his fictional underground world for good reason — and on this tour, you'll understand exactly why. Isafjordur: History at Hesteyri

This boat tour goes to the beaches of Hornstrandir, one of the most beautiful and remote areas in Iceland. The abandoned village of Hesteyri can only be reached by boat and is therefore a wonderfully unspoiled land where time has stood still for several decades. Your boat ride will afford spectacular sceneries of the fjord and if the weather is clear you'll catch a glimpse of Drangajökull Glacier and maybe some puffins and arctic terns. On rare occasions whales are seen in the fjords and seals sometime swim alongside the boat. The 70-minute journey will take you to Hesteyri village. This s isolated spit of land is framed with steep cliffs and has two majestic mountains in its background. The area is now a nature reserve, where the arctic fox feels very much at home and you are likely to see some scurrying off. Until the 1950s Hesteyri had a small and scattered community supported by the industry of whaling and later by a herring processing plant. This visit will give you insights into the isolation and hardships the villagers faced that eventually proved too hard to bear. The villagers made the joint decision to abandon their homes and seek a new life elsewhere. A dozen houses are still maintained as summer residences for the former villagers and their descendants. Your guide will take you on an informative walk around this fascinating place. Isafjordur: The Trolls Throne

Wild and rugged, uncompromising and mesmerizingly beautiful, geologically and volcanically active, a place of thermal springs, mountains, valleys, rivers and waterfalls: the incredible island of Iceland is all of these things. In addition, - as everybody surely knows - the island's craggy mountainsides provide a comfortable home for the world's remaining trolls, those formidable creatures of Norse mythology. According to a legend told by the locals of Ísafjörður, a huge troll once lived in the area and one day, he decided to go for a walk in the fjord. However, soon getting tired from all the exercise, the troll spotted a nice tall mountain high above the town that looked like the perfect spot to have a rest. However, when the thickset troll sat down, his incredible weight squashed part of the mountainside, leaving a large indentation that remains visible to this day: the so-called Troll's Throne, or Naustahvilft, Its proper name. Situated only a few hundred feet up the mountain from the port, the Troll's Throne is a popular hiking destination for tourists and locals alike. Your walking experience up to the bowl-like "throne," which was actually formed by a glacier, will take you over ideal hiking terrain: a good mixture of grass, soil and sheep-trodden paths. Once at the top, you will be rewarded with wonderful views over the port and the picturesque fjord. Your return hike back down the mountain to your ship marks the end of this troll-themed tour. Husavík was the first place in Iceland to be settled by a Norseman and is a fishing, tourist and popular whale watching center, where many species of whales can be seen including minke whale, humpback whale and blue whale, harbor porpoise, and white-beaked dolphin. Husavik: Lake Mývatn & Dettifoss Waterfall

This tour encompasses all the major sites at the magical Lake Mývatn area with the added exhilarating opportunity to see Dettifoss Waterfall, reputed to be the most powerful waterfall in Europe. Begin by driving 90 minutes into the largest national park in Iceland. There you will witness the amazing power of Dettifoss Waterfall. Massive quantities of water hurl down a high cliff with a thunderous noise. It has been nicknamed 'the beast' as its force is such that the bedrock trembles when hit by the weight of an immense column of white-foaming water. From Dettifoss the tour will continue to Lake Mývatn, one of Iceland's natural treasures. The lake is home to tens of thousands of birds, among them a variety of duck species. The area surrounding the lake is of tremendous geological interest. Your first stop is Námaskarð - a striking geothermal field full of mud-pots, steam vents, sulphur deposits, boiling springs and fumaroles. The experience is otherworldly with incredible colors, steam that rises from the earth and the loud popping of air bubbles in the mud-pots. Close by is Dimmuborgir, a dramatic lava landscape with strange formations, columns and arches that have been the source of many folktales in Iceland. The name means "dark fortress," an appropriately mystical name for this peculiar place. The pseudo-craters at Skútustaðir will be the last stop on your journey. The craters were formed by gas explosions when boiling lava flowed over the wetlands near the lake. Husavik: Whale Safari & Puffins

This special tour combines sightseeing of two loveable animals - whales and puffins on a speedy RIB boat. The tour will begin with a short walk from the yacht to the RIB boats, that allow for a closer look at the animals than other large boats. After getting dressed in warm clothing and secure life vests, the boat will sail to a puffin colon in the bay. There thousands of Atlantic puffins nest during the summer months. After admiring these "Clowns of the ocean" head further out into the bay to seek out some whales. Seydisfjordur: Hike To Hengifoss Waterfall

This hiking tour will take you on a walk to the third highest waterfall in Iceland. You will depart from the pier and drive over the impressive mountain pass of Fjardarheidi , passing several small waterfalls. You will stop at the village of Egilsstadir , then drive along Iceland's third largest lake, Lagarfljot , with a lake bed that lies 328 feet below sea level. You will arrive at the starting point of your hike and it will take about 1.5 hours to reach the waterfall, with a drop of 387 feet. You will walk to Skansinn, an old fort built by orders of the Danish King in the 17th century. You will see the wooden church near the fort and then do a light hike up the hill to the newly formed lava fields of Eldfell. You will walk along the edge of the lava field with a great view over the town. You will see signs of old houses that were buried during the eruption as you walk to the crater of Eldfell where you will appreciate more of the power of nature. Concierge Collection: Heimaey Island, ATV Adventure Double Ride

Come and join a 1-hour ATV tour around the volcano in Vestmannaeyjar and experience the unique view the island and its surroundings. During the trip, you will go to PrestvikB beach where the fishing ship Pelagus stranded. You will also drive around and view the scene where Guðlaugur Friðþórsson reached land after 4 miles (6 km) of swimming in the dark and cold sea after the trawler Hellisey VE 503 sank. You will drive around the lava and into the middle of the crater of the volcano Eldfell before heading along the coast, where the view is breathtaking. This trip is recommended for all who enjoy driving around the historical sites of Vestmannaeyjar in a unique way, riding an ATV. The ATV's are automatic and easy to drive so no specific experience is needed. All ATV's are for 2 persons. Please note; Price is per-person; there will be 2 people on each bike. The driver needs to have a valid driving license and passengers need to be 6 years or older. This is a guided trip where each person will be provided a waterproof overalls and a helmet. Heimaey Island: Concierge Collection: Caves & Islands Rib Safari

The Westman Islands are renowned for their birdlife and interesting geological history . You will walk to the RIB boat location where you will have a brief introduction to RIBs before your safari begins. You will travel into some of the caves around the area, such as the Eider Duck Cave, whose name derives from the eider duck colony nearby. You will visit a huge and extremely deep cave with beautiful basalt columns decorating the walls. You will also see a small cave where the sunlight shines through, creating a mesmerizing interplay of light and water. The final cave you will see is the roomy Cliff Cave with its excellent acoustics. Please note : While wildlife sightings are not guaranteed, whales are sometimes sighted on this tour, including orca, dolphins and porpoises. Often seals make an appearance as well as sea birds such as cormorants, fulmars, gannets and puffins. This trip is not recommended for people with back problems and pregnant women.
