During our complimentary Destination Discovery Event: Sagas & Songs at the Blue Church, offered on this and select other voyages, you’ll get a rare insider’s look at both local landmarks and the culture of this small Icelandic community.

Located in the East Fjords between steep mountains, the settlement grew up in the late 1800s around the Norwegian herring fishery. Many of the colorful old timbered houses were imported from Norway by wealthy merchants and whalers. Perhaps the most remarkable building, though, is the Blue Church.

With clean, Scandinavian lines and a beautiful glacier blue color, the church is one of Iceland’s most recognizable landmarks. It was moved or rebuilt a few times over the years before finding its permanent home in Seydisfjordur in 1922. (Sometimes intentionally and sometimes at the whim of Mother Nature, through storms and fire.) Leading up to the church is the vibrantly colored Rainbow Street presenting a scene worthy of a fairytale.

Beautiful Grundarfjordur is located between a mountain range and the sea.  The road nearby crosses a lava field that is partially warm so snow does not always stick there. The main attraction of the area is Snæfellsjokull National Park full of regal glaciers, lava fields, waterfalls, caves, calderas, and basalt cliffs. The peninsula there received the EARTHCHECK Sustainable Community Award in 2010, the first area in Iceland to win such an award.

The scenic colonial town of Qaqortoq is easily seen on foot. Walk to the town square with its gorgeous fountain built of Igaliku rocks. Colorful houses encircle the square and Our Saviour's Church, built in 1832, is nearby. There are many works of art that have been chiseled into the rocks at the sculpture park called "Stone and Man,"  and the local museum full of Nordic artifacts is definitely worth a visit. Another point of interest is the fishing wharf where fresh and dried fish is sold.

The southernmost town in Greenland located at the mouth of the Tasermuit Fjord, Nanortalik shares space with polar bears who live and hunt on the sea outside of town. Vertical cliffs and steep peaks characterize the area around Nanortalik and Ketil Mountain at 6,562 feet has one of the highest climbing walls with Greenland's only natural forest just 25 miles away. The locals are charming and friendly and known for their choir singing, which you may end up hearing.

Beautiful Grundarfjordur is located between a mountain range and the sea.  The road nearby crosses a lava field that is partially warm so snow does not always stick there. The main attraction of the area is Snæfellsjokull National Park full of regal glaciers, lava fields, waterfalls, caves, calderas, and basalt cliffs. The peninsula there received the EARTHCHECK Sustainable Community Award in 2010, the first area in Iceland to win such an award.

Grundarfjordur: A Journey to the Center of the Earth

Jules Verne chose Snæfellsjökull as the entrance to his fictional underground world for good reason — and on this tour, you'll understand exactly why. A scenic drive beneath the glacier brings you to the Malarrif Visitor Centre, where a comfort stop allows time to use the facilities before continuing the short distance to Vatnshellir, an 8,000-year-old lava tube that descends deep into the earth in two dramatic sections. Your guide fits the group with helmets and torches before leading the way into the upper cave, where extraordinary lava formations line the walls, and then down a long, narrow staircase into the lower chamber — a hidden world that has sat in total darkness for millennia. Grundarfjordur, Concierge Collection, Highlights of Snaefellsnes

Departing Grundarfjörður, wind along a dramatic coastline dotted with small fishing villages, with the legendary Snæfellsjökull glacier — immortalized by Jules Verne in Journey to the Centre of the Earth — rising ahead among a landscape of striking mountains and volcanic formations.

The tour begins with a comfort stop at the Hellissandur Visitor Centre before continuing to Djúpalónssandur beach, where a short walk leads to a viewing platform overlooking the black-sand shore and open ocean — and the rusted remains of a Grimsby trawler wrecked here in 1948.

Grundarfjordur: Wonders of the West

This full sweep of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula takes in its greatest landmarks in a single, well-paced day. The tour begins with a quick stop at Kirkjufell — Iceland's most photographed mountain, its distinctive peak rising straight from the sea — before heading west along the peninsula. A visit to the black church at Búðir is followed by time in Arnarstapi, where an optional coastal walk leads to the towering stone arch and the statue of the legendary guardian Bárður. Small and easily walkable Isafjordur has one of the largest fisheries in Iceland. But the sever decline of the fishing industry has caused Isafjordur to look elsewhere for work. Despite its small size, this town has a school of music and has become a center for alternative music and they host a yearly festival that provides a platform for local musicians, band from around Iceland and the world to perform.

Isafjordur: History at Hesteyri

This boat tour goes to the beaches of Hornstrandir, one of the most beautiful and remote areas in Iceland. The abandoned village of Hesteyri can only be reached by boat and is therefore a wonderfully unspoiled land where time has stood still for several decades. Your boat ride will afford spectacular sceneries of the fjord and if the weather is clear you'll catch a glimpse of Drangajökull Glacier and maybe some puffins and arctic terns. On rare occasions whales are seen in the fjords and seals sometime swim alongside the boat. The 70-minute journey will take you to Hesteyri village. This s isolated spit of land is framed with steep cliffs and has two majestic mountains in its background. The area is now a nature reserve, where the arctic fox feels very much at home and you are likely to see some scurrying off. Until the 1950s Hesteyri had a small and scattered community supported by the industry of whaling and later by a herring processing plant. This visit will give you insights into the isolation and hardships the villagers faced that eventually proved too hard to bear. The villagers made the joint decision to abandon their homes and seek a new life elsewhere. A dozen houses are still maintained as summer residences for the former villagers and their descendants. Your guide will take you on an informative walk around this fascinating place. You'll have some refreshments in the former doctor's residence before heading back to Ísafjörður and your ship Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes and warm layered clothing.

Isafjordur: The Trolls Throne

Wild and rugged, uncompromising and mesmerizingly beautiful, geologically and volcanically active, a place of thermal springs, mountains, valleys, rivers and waterfalls: the incredible island of Iceland is all of these things. In addition, - as everybody surely knows - the island's craggy mountainsides provide a comfortable home for the world's remaining trolls, those formidable creatures of Norse mythology. According to a legend told by the locals of Ísafjörður, a huge troll once lived in the area and one day, he decided to go for a walk in the fjord. However, soon getting tired from all the exercise, the troll spotted a nice tall mountain high above the town that looked like the perfect spot to have a rest. However, when the thickset troll sat down, his incredible weight squashed part of the mountainside, leaving a large indentation that remains visible to this day: the so-called Troll's Throne, or Naustahvilft, Its proper name. Situated only a few hundred feet up the mountain from the port, the Troll's Throne is a popular hiking destination for tourists and locals alike. Your walking experience up to the bowl-like "throne," which was actually formed by a glacier, will take you over ideal hiking terrain: a good mixture of grass, soil and sheep-trodden paths. Once at the top, you will be rewarded with wonderful views over the port and the picturesque fjord. Your return hike back down the mountain to your ship marks the end of this troll-themed tour. Isafjordur: Concierge Collection: RIB Boat Whale Watching

Akureyri has long been the economic and cultural center of Northern Iceland. Seydisfjord is 11 miles of long, narrow, beautiful waterway surrounded by high mountains that ends at the town of Seydisfjordur, known for its old multi-colored wooden buildings and cascading waterfalls even in the town.  This is home of the Skalanes Nature Reserve with its wide variety of wildlife including more than 45 bird species.  The first high-voltage electricity in Iceland was opened here in 1913 and is still in operation today. A popular hiking path starts at the town center, following the east bank of the Fjardara River that flows through the center of town. 

Seydisfjordur: Chasing Waterfalls

The nature surrounding the town of Seydisfjordur is a spellbinding display of waterfalls, mountains, and the ocean. This hiking tour will provide you with the excellent opportunity to explore the beauty of the Icelandic landscape. This guided walk will take you on a hike up to a part of the Vestdalur Valley near Seydisfjordur. The valley is a protected nature reserve due to its remarkable flora. Eventually you will reach the abandoned town of Vestdalseyri, where you will find ruins of the former town. The town was inhabited for roughly a century (1851-1963). Originally there was a whaling station and it was home to one of the largest cooperatives in the country. Despite its beautiful and sunny location the town declined with the last inhabitant leaving it in 1963. You will walk past a series of beautiful waterfalls that will provide ideal photo opportunities, then return back to the coach and return to the pier. Seydisfjordur: Hike To Hengifoss Waterfall

This hiking tour will take you on a walk to the third highest waterfall in Iceland. You will depart from the pier and drive over the impressive mountain pass of Fjardarheidi , passing several small waterfalls. You will stop at the village of Egilsstadir , then drive along Iceland's third largest lake, Lagarfljot , with a lake bed that lies 328 feet below sea level. You will arrive at the starting point of your hike and it will take about 1.5 hours to reach the waterfall, with a drop of 387 feet. Seydisfjord is 11 miles of long, narrow, beautiful waterway surrounded by high mountains that ends at the town of Seydisfjordur, known for its old multi-colored wooden buildings and cascading waterfalls even in the town.  This is home of the Skalanes Nature Reserve with its wide variety of wildlife including more than 45 bird species.  The first high-voltage electricity in Iceland was opened here in 1913 and is still in operation today. A popular hiking path starts at the town center, following the east bank of the Fjardara River that flows through the center of town. 

Seydisfjordur: Chasing Waterfalls

The nature surrounding the town of Seydisfjordur is a spellbinding display of waterfalls, mountains, and the ocean. This hiking tour will provide you with the excellent opportunity to explore the beauty of the Icelandic landscape. This guided walk will take you on a hike up to a part of the Vestdalur Valley near Seydisfjordur. The valley is a protected nature reserve due to its remarkable flora. Eventually you will reach the abandoned town of Vestdalseyri, where you will find ruins of the former town. The town was inhabited for roughly a century (1851-1963). Originally there was a whaling station and it was home to one of the largest cooperatives in the country. Despite its beautiful and sunny location the town declined with the last inhabitant leaving it in 1963. You will walk past a series of beautiful waterfalls that will provide ideal photo opportunities, then return back to the coach and return to the pier. The scenic colonial town of Qaqortoq is easily seen on foot. Walk to the town square with its gorgeous fountain built of Igaliku rocks. Colorful houses encircle the square and Our Saviour's Church, built in 1832, is nearby. There are many works of art that have been chiseled into the rocks at the sculpture park called "Stone and Man,"  and the local museum full of Nordic artifacts is definitely worth a visit. Another point of interest is the fishing wharf where fresh and dried fish is sold.

Qaqortoq, City Walk

You will start your city walk of Qaqortoq from the harbor. Your guide will take you through the town and share historical and personal knowledge about the Inuit culture , old traditions as well as modern traditions and how it is to life in the Arctic region. The walk will pass the harbor and its fishing industry. Your guide will tell you about the outdoor gallery around town, take you to the churches, talk about the school system and the youth. You will end the tour at the town square and see the first fountain made in Greenland . The walk stops at the museum. Qaqortoq, Boat Tour to the Viking Ruins & Hvaslo Church Ruins

Eric the Red came to Greenland for the first time in year 982 and returned with 14 ships in year 985. He settled in the settlement, known today as Qassiarsuk. Around year 1300 a church was built in Hvalsø, which is the last place in Greenland, mentioned in the old sagas, a wedding from year 1408 between Thorstein Olafsson and Sigrid Bjørn's daughter. Hvalsø was an important area in the time of the North Men and has today one of the best-preserved churches in Greenland. On this tour you will meet your captain at the harbor and sail from Qaqortoq towards Hvalsø into the fjord around Qaqortoq. The tour to Hvalsø is approx. 25 min. and at Hvalsø you will have approx. 45 min. to search around the area before you head back. You will have time to look around the old ruins of the farms and the best-preserved church ruins of Hvalsø. If you have time, we recommend you sit down close to the church and just enjoy and imagine the Arctic life back in the 1300 hundred. Bonne Bay, Journey To The Center Of The Earth

Woody Point on the south side of Gros Morne National Park provides easy access (10-minute drive) to the Gros Morne's Discovery Centre (primary interpretation centre). An additional 10-minute drive will take you to the Tablelands which is the landform that gave the park its UNESCO World Heritage Site designation. You will walk on the Tablelands trail looking at its unique physical nature and also looking at the distinctive plants that make this landform home. You will also get a great view of Gros Morne, the mountain the park was named after. A Parks Canada Interpreter will join you at the Tablelands to ensure that you get to hear about this region's unique geology. The Discovery Centre features exhibits that tell the story of the region's many geological highlights. After the morning excursion, you will return to the pier in Woody Point and go back on board the yacht for lunch while the yacht repositions to Norris Point on the north side of the park to meet guests for the afternoon excursion if booked.
