Ermoupoli, Highlights of Syros

During the 19th century Ermoupoli was Greece's principal port and stands on a natural amphitheater site. You will board your motor coach that will take you from the port up the long, steep hill to the top where you will see the Cathedral of St. George. You will visit this 14th century building before descending on foot to pass by the Cappuchin Monastery of St. John. Continue your descent to the bottom of the hill and re-board your coach for the drive across the island. You will pass the villages of Vari and Chroussa and reach the village of Posidonia. You will see the outside of the Tsiropina Mansion, a building that used to belong to one of the most renowned families in Greece and used to serve as the Town Hall. Next you will travel to the seaside village of Finikas where you will stop for refreshments. Continue on your scenic drive through the villages of Galissas and Talanta on your way back to Ermoupoli. Chora, on the west coast, is the island's port and capital. It is a large town divided in two historic neighborhoods - Bourgos where the Greeks lived and Kastro where the Venetian Catholics lived. Kastro is the most alluring part of the town with winding alleyways and white-washed houses. A causeway to the north of the port leads to the islet of Palatia and the unfinished Temple of Apollo, Naxos' most famous landmark (also known as Portara). After visiting the temple, you will walk back to the Kastro area. Walking in the Kastro you will be able to admire the Orthodox Cathedral, the Catholic Cathedral and the Archaeological Museum. The museum includes collections of vases and torsos as well as Hellenistic and Roman terraccota figurines. There are also some early Cycladic figurines. Volcanic Milos, the most westerly island of the Cyclades has stunning beaches, coves, and geologically interesting places. Since antiquity the island has been quarried for its minerals. Obsidian, a hard, black volcanic glass used for manufacturing sharp blades was mined on the island and exported throughout the Mediterranean. You will visit the Sarakiniko Beach with its lunar landscape, the result of volcanic eruptions. This beautiful, moon-like spot is one of the island's many geological wonders and perhaps one of the most photographed places in the Cyclades. You'll take a walk down the beach so you can experience this one-of-a-kind location and take photographs. Next you will visit the cave of Papafragkas, a cluster of deep-sea inlets and sea caves. Located next to Papafragkas Cave is Filakopi, a settlement dating back to the Neolithic Period (approximately 9,000 to 4,000 B.C.) and remained an active settlement until 1,000 B.C. From Papafragkas you can see the remains of the walls of the city (only standing remains of the city at this point). The tour does NOT enter the archaeological site. Next stop Plak a and its cobble streets and alleys. Plaka is a classic Cycladic village with white stone houses and bougainvillea flowers, locted on a hilltop. You'll walk through the village to admire its traditional architecture and its stunning view of the sea, and you'll taste some homemade sweets at the village's local pastry shops at your leisure. Following, the Christian Catacombs , which are the largest in Greece, and the ruins of the ancient city of Klima . Close to the Catacombs is the marble amphitheater. There are still seven intact seat rows and there is a lovely view of the bay. On the way to the theater from the Catacombs, you will also visit the site where Venus de Milo was discovered in 1820 (now residing in the Louvre in Paris). Explore the tiny uninhabited island of Delos, one of the most important archaeological sites in all Greece. Start your journey with a 45-minute ferry ride to this richly historic site. Delos was the major center of the ancient Greek world and the mythical birthplace of the god Apollo and his twin sister Artemis. Your 2 1/2-hour guided stroll includes such attractions as the Sanctuary of Apollo with its three temples dating from the 6th and 5th centuries B.C. To the west of this sanctuary lies the Sacred Lake, where Apollo was reputedly born. Standing guard over the Sacred Lake are nine replicas of the famous marble lions, which were a gift from the people of Naxos in the 7th century B.C. Other attractions include the amphitheater and the nearby theater quarter where wealthy owners built opulent houses with grand colonnaded courtyards. The island's checkered history finally led to its destruction in 88 B.C. by Mithridates, the King of Pontus. Large-scale restoration work has continued for many years and in 1990 the island was declared a World's Cultural Heritage Site, protected by UNESCO. Your guided walk concludes back at the ferry, for direct return to Mykonos. On arrival there, you are free to return to the yacht at your leisure. Patmos, Monastery & Cave of St John

An island of rare beauty captivating the visitor at first glance, Patmos has a picturesque harbor dominated by the imposing Monastery of St. John standing on the hill above. Leaving Skala harbor, you will take a 10-minute drive to the impressive village of Chora. The Monastery of St. John is situated among gleaming white houses forming a startling contrast to its dark mass. Built in 1088, it has thick, high walls crowned all around with battlements and a total of eight chapels. The courtyard is laid with pebbles and decorated with arches through which one can see the intricately designed frescoes adorning the chapel entrance. The museum houses a magnificent collection of jeweled chalices, crowns and crosses, icons and religious paintings, including an original El Greco. Your tour will continue with a visit to the Grotto of St. John, a 17th century monastery built around the cave where St. John lived for two years while he wrote of the Apocalypse. Depart from the pier for a short scenic ride first to the Grotto of St. John where he heard the voice of God, wrote his revelations, and spent 16 months in exile. This simple cave is now a chapel and place of pilgrimage. Continue on to the Monastery of St. John the Theologian , built on an ancient acropolis. The monastery's massive 15th century walls and 17th century battlements looming over the town, belie an intimate and peaceful interior of arches, inlaid pebble stone floors and whitewashed buildings. Santorini, The Ancient City of Akrotiri & Oia

Monemvasia is unique among ruined medieval cities in that it is entirely built on a rock that appears to be barren when seen from the mainland. Your tour will commence with a walk through the narrow streets at the castle, where the streets are so tiny that in many places only two people can walk side by side. While strolling along these narrow lanes you will see ruined houses and Byzantine churches and Church of Christ Elkomenos. This cathedral dates back to the 13th century, but features alterations made during the Venetian occupation of Monemvasia. Then you will visit "Liotrivi" (Olive Oil Factory ), a fully restored historic mansion that previously was the home of the family Ritsos, where the world-renowned poet lived during his childhood. You will have a guided tour in the old olive mill and learn the traditional method of producing extra virgin olive oil. You will walk to the vineyards and the olive groves. In a patio area, an experienced cook will knead and bake traditional bread in a wood-oven. The bread made, along with other local products, will be served to you in an appetizer buffet under the olive trees where you will have the opportunity to also taste the famous wines of Monemvasia. Monemvasia Castle

Nafplio, UNESCO Sites: The Kings Tomb & Epic Theatre of Epidaurus

Leaving the quayside, you will proceed along a picturesque and twisting road on a 45-minute drive, towards the site of Epidaurus. The famous Theater of Epidaurus is the best-preserved ancient Greek Theater. Located next to the sanctuary-hospital of Asclepius, the ancient Greek God of Healing, the theater's function was directly connected with this sanctuary. Theater was very highly regarded in antiquity. The Ancient Greeks seemed to know that good psychological condition was beneficial to those suffering from mental and psychological illnesses. For this reason they encouraged patients to watch theatrical performances. Famous for its superb acoustics, the theater was built in the 4th century BC and had a capacity of about 12,000 spectators. People arrived from all over the Greek world in order to attend the religious events dedicated to Asclepius. The architect who designed and built the theater was one of the best architects in Greece. Due to his excellent design, the acoustics are so good, one can be sitting right at the top in the last row and still hear even a coin dropping the middle of the stage. After your visit, your tour will continue to the ruins of Mycenae. The first in-depth excavations were carried out by the German archaeologist Schliemann in 1876, who was obsessed with finding the grave of Agamemnon. His diligent work exposed the famous Lion's Gate, the entrance to the city, which contains the shaft burial graves of some ancient nobles. A short distance away is the Beehive Tomb, so-called due to its unusual shape. Afterward, return to the pier. Please note: Wear comfortable shoes and bring sunscreen.

Nafplio: Venetian Fortress & Walking Tour of Nafplion

Enjoy a brief drive to the Castle of Palamidi standing proudly over Nafplio. The castle is one of the most important and best-preserved castles in Greece, an exquisite example of Venetian architecture of the 18th century. The hill at which the castle is located was named after Palamidis, the hero of Homer's Epics. It is said that, in 1686, the Venetian Commander-in-Chief Morosini envisioned the construction of the castle, whose architectural design was undertaken by Governor Grimani. In 1715, just one year after its completion, it was occupied by the Turks and one century later it finally came to the possession of the Greeks. You will have photo opportunities of the magnificent views of the town below as well as the Argolis Bay. Following fortress visit you will return to Nafplio. It is one of Greece's most romantic and prettiest towns. The narrow streets of the old town are filled with elegant Venetian houses and gracious neoclassical mansions. During your walking tour, marvel at the beautiful neoclassical buildings lining the port, and then on to the Kapodistriou Square and park, dedicated to the memory of the first governor of Greece. In the park with his beloved Palamidi Fortress in the background, is the statue of Kolokotronis, known as the Grand Old Man of the Morea, being the leader of the Greeks during the War of Independence. It was he who besieged the Turkish occupied Palamidi Citadel for 15 months before it was finally surrendered back. Across the way you can see the current Town Hall building, originally the very first High School of Greece. Continuing on through the backstreets not normally meant for tourists, you come upon the old Catholic Church and the 1702 Church of Agios Spyidon, just below. The 'worry beads' you see everywhere in Greece have a museum of their own in Nafplio and you will visit the "Museum of Komboloi" to learn of their origin. Next you will proceed through the popular Syntagma Square (Constitution Square) with its beautiful buildings, primarily in neoclassical style, that create a beautiful frame around the square, and the polished marble floor reflects both sunlight and streetlights. Before returning back to the yacht, in true Greek style, you will have the opportunity to sample the favorite spirit of the Greeks, Ouzo. Time permitting you may choose to remain in town for more time at leisure or return to the tender pick up point and make your way back to the yacht. Nafplio: Wine Paths of Argolis

The Peloponnese wine region is historically significant for the wine world. During the Venetian rule of the Middle Ages, sweet Malvasia wines began to be traded all over Europe, especially to big centers like London and Paris. The modern Peloponnese wine region is one of the most viticulturally productive areas in Greece. The millenary Greek wine tradition is present in Peloponnesian wines, where native grape varieties such as Agiorgitiko, Moschofilero, and Mavrodaphne are grown. The wines of the Peloponnese are complex and interesting, from fresh and minerally whites to full-bodied reds. The Peloponnese wine region is the largest vineyard area in Greece, representing around 31% of wine production in the country with eight main subregions. Today you will follow a wine path of Argolis by visiting 2 wineries, Gofas Winery and Semeli Estate. The Gofas family cultivates its own vineyards and has delivered wine from generation to generation. In 1959 the family decided to utilize the proprietary vineyard in the Koutsi and Daphne areas. The first vinification was made in linen, in the wine press in the family home in Nemea with manual vinification means. In 1998 the young Constantine Gofas born and raised as a viticulturist took over the family business, giving it a new impetus to a steady upward course. The winery has been modernized with new machinery but managed to retain its family aura. In 2011 the winery relocated to Koutsi village in a privately owned vineyard next to the mythical river Asopos. After the visit and tasting, your tour will continue to Semeli Estate. Founded in 1979, Semeli is a leading Greek winery and one of the country's most significant wine-related developments. With deep roots in time-honored traditions Semeli produces wines of exceptional quality. The sunny Mediterranean climate and the extraordinary terroir, combined with the expert craftsmanship of their winemakers and the successful blending of indigenous and international varieties, result in wines of distinct character that have earned the respect of experts and captured the hearts of wine lovers worldwide.
