With 3,000 years of history, you can't turn around in Athens without encountering the past. The Acropolis, a UNESCO site, the Plaka, and the Acropolis Museum are must-sees. You'll want to be on deck today as we transit the narrow Corinth Canal with other private yachts and Greek mail steamers. It's a shortcut reserved for petite ships like ours, and as we cruise between the narrow limestone walls we are the envy of all the ancient Romans who once portaged their ships along this very route before there was a canal.  Transit through the Corinth Canal is subject to local conditions and may occasionally be impacted by closures due to natural causes or construction activity beyond Windstar’s control. Should a closure occur, the itinerary will be updated accordingly, and booked guests will be notified as soon as information becomes available.

Itea, Mythology of Delphi

In antiquity Delphi was one of the world's most important religious centers. The Sanctuary of Apollo attracted a host of pilgrims who came to consult the oracle. Even now an aura of mystery surrounds the ruins of Delphi,a UNESCO World Heritage Site, exposed on a rocky slope. For sheer grandeur of natural beauty combined with ancient ruins, there is probably no other spot on earth that rivals Delphi. Visit the ancient Sanctuary of Apollo, where the celebrated oracle Pythia dwelt. Her ambiguous prophecies were known and respected all over the ancient world. Visit the Temple of Apollo, the Sacred Way, the amphitheater, the best preserved stadium of Greece, and the Castalian spring, where in ancient days the pilgrims had to wash before they were allowed to consult the oracle. In the Delphi museum, see such treasures as the Omphalos, which marked the center of the world, and the magnificent bronze Charioteer, one of the finest pieces surviving from the 5th century BC. Itea, Monastery of Ossios Loukas

Departing from the quayside, your motor coach will proceed along a picturesque and twisting road on a 45-minute drive where you can enjoy the relaxing views of the typical Greek countryside. Standing impressively on the brow of a peaked hill facing south, the majestic Monastery of Ossios Loukas commands a spectacular view of the adjacent valley. Catania, Taormina & Mt. Etna

See the legendary beauty of Sicily as your excursion begins with a pleasant 60-minute drive to Taormina . Built in the 3rd century B.C., the city is perched on a terrace overlooking the sea, with a medieval character that will delight you. Your tour will begin on foot as your guide leads you along cobblestone streets to Palazzo Corvaj a, a 15th century building adorned with classic double windows. Next, you will stroll to the spectacularly situated Greco-Roman Theatre built in the 3rd century B.C. Renowned for its unique acoustical qualities, it is still used for open-air concerts and boasts a beautiful view of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mount Etna and Naxos Bay below. You will also have time to stroll or shop along the famous Corso Umberto before your bus departs for Mount Etna. This very active volcano is the largest in Europe at 10,723 feet, and has erupted 130 times. Your drive to Mount Etna is along a coastal highway and through a fertile paradise of green vineyards and golden citrus groves, passing through villages such as Santa Venerina and Zafferana Etnea . You will see the city of Catania , overwhelmed by an eruption 300 years ago, and walk around Crateri Silvestri inspecting the lava flow from the eruption of 1983. Lunch is included on this tour. Please note : Strenuous uphill walking is involved so this tour is not recommended for guests with heart or respiratory conditions or those with limited mobility. As participants will ascend to an altitude of 6,200 feet, it is recommended guests wear comfortable clothes, flat shoes and bring a jacket.

Catania, Ancient Syracuse *

The name of Siracuse suggests a warm climate, blue skies, a beautiful bay, and the ancient ruins of a Greek city which was the rival of Athens. You will board your bus for the 75-minute ride to Neapolis Archaeological Park which was created between 1952 and 1955 and contains many classical monuments. For security reasons you will only have access to the Greek Theatre and part of the Latomia del Paradiso , one of the ancient stone quarries; the other monuments can be viewed from a distance. This doesn't detract in any way from the powerful fascination of this unique place. The Greek Theatre, dated back to 5th century B.C,. is one of the largest and best preserved theaters of the ancient world. The Roman Amphitheater which is hewn out of the rocks, dates from 2nd century A.D., and the entrance and gangways for animals and gladiators can still be seen. You'll proceed to Ortigia and walk about a half a mile to Old Town Ortigia. You will visit Arethusa Fountain the legendary cradle of the city. From the nearby platform there is a view of the beautiful Bay of Siracuse, you will proceed to the Cathedral built in the 7th century on the foundation of the former Temple of Minerva, using the nine columns which can be seen on the north side and the 19 columns of the nave. Please note : This tour has a substantial amount of walking and is not recommended for people with limited mobility or walking difficulties. The bus is not wheelchair accessible.
