There can be no better place to start a visit to this attractive region than Saint Emilion, heartland of the merlot grape, which produces delicious, rich, round wines. The vines on the "hill with a thousand châteaux," reach right up to Saint Emilion's 13th century town walls and surrounding moat dug out of solid rock . Your tour will begin driving by the outside of the submarine base built by the German navy during World War II which became the setting for the movie Das Boot. A German stronghold, La Rochelle was the last French city to be freed at the end of the war. En route to La Rochelle pass the sea front, Port-Neuf district, and the elegant gardens of Le Mail. Enter the city center from the Verdun Square and La Rochelle Cathedral. You will disembark the tour bus close by the Saint Sauveur Church and continue the guided tour on foot: discover the Old Harbor with the two towers at the entrance of the harbor, the larger of these is Tour Saint-Nicolas (15th century, 138 feet high), the other, Tour de la Chaîne (14th century), was built to house the great chain now lying at its base, which used to be strung across to St Nicolas each night to safely close off the harbor from attack. Mont St. Michel is considered one of the great religious sites in all of Europe and is often compared to St. Peter's, Chartres, and Durham. First built following the appearance of Archangel Michael to the Bishop of Avranches, the abbey is constructed at the summit of an immense granite precipice 250 feet above the sea - a monument to the heyday of Norman power and influence in the world. Caen, American Cemetery & Omaha Beach

Relive one of the most historic events of World War II during this memorable, half-day excursion to the Normandy Landing Beaches. Leave Caen on a 60-minute drive to Colleville passing through Arromanches where a short distance offshore, remnants of the artificial port can still be seen. Your first stop of the day will be the American Cemetery of Colleville-sur-Mer. The majority of the nearly 10,000 American soldiers killed at Omaha Beach are buried in this 170-acre (69-hectare) cemetery on land given to the United States by France as a token of gratitude. Here, 9,386 marble crosses and Stars of David are aligned on a plateau above the beach. A memorial contains the Tablets of the Missing, and a map outlines the battle sites of the Normandy beaches. A ceremony will be conducted and a wreath of flowers laid in the name of your ship. After this moving tribute to these heroes, reach Omaha Beach and feel the sacrifice American forces went through to free Normandy, France and Europe. You will then rejoin your coach to drive to Longues-sur-Mer. The key element of the Atlantic Wall, the battery of Longues-sur-Mer included a range-finding post and four casemates, each housing a 150-mm gun. It was built on a clifftop overlooking the English Channel. Despite numerous allied air raids in the night of June 5, 1944, the battery was still operational in the morning, making it particularly deadly for the allied forces. Caen, Early Departure: D-Day Landing in Normandy with Lunch

Relive one of the most historic events of World War II during this memorable, full-day excursion to Normandy. Plus, enjoy the opportunity to depart the ship early at the Ouistreham locks. Experience the unique opportunity to depart from the ship early at the locks of Ouistreham, located at the mouth of the Orne river. Here guests will depart the ship early and walk across the locks in small groups before departing early for their full-day tour. The ship will then continue on to Caen and will await your return later in the day. After a 60-minute drive, you will reach Arromanches for a visit to the Landing Museum. This important museum is dedicated to the largest landing operation in history on June 6, 1944, when the Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy to attack the German lines. During your visit, see films and models that re-create the entire operation along the D-Day beaches, and illustrate the logistical importance of Port Winston. A short distance offshore, remnants of the artificial port can still be seen. After some free time in Arromanches, you will be going to Longues-sur-Mer. It was built on a clifftop overlooking the English Channel. Despite numerous allied air raids in the night of June 5,1944, the battery was still operational on the morning of June, 6 th , making it particularly deadly for the allied forces. It was disabled later that day by bombardments from allied battle ships at sea. After this stop reach the Château La Chenevière nearby for a well-deserved lunch. Enjoy the gastronomic cuisine in an amazing environment, before boarding your coach to reach the American Cemetery of Colleville-Saint Laurent. The majority of the nearly 10,000 American soldiers killed at Omaha Beach are buried in this 170-acre (69-hectare) cemetery on land given to the United States by France as a token of gratitude. Here, 9,386 marble crosses and Stars of David are aligned on a plateau above the beach. A memorial contains the Tablets of the Missing, and a map outlines the battle sites of the Normandy beaches. A ceremony will be conducted and a wreath of flowers laid in the name of our ship. After this moving tribute to these heroes, reach Omaha Beach and feel the sacrifice American forces went through to free Normandy, France and Europe. Finally, your guide will bring you to the famous Pointe du Hoc: captured on the morning of the 6th of June 1944 by Colonel Rudder's Rangers, the site was also one of the key features of the German defensive fortifications. You will then have a 60-minute drive to Caen to meet the ship. Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes and clothes and bring euros for souvenirs. Caen, Norman Apples: From Tree to Bottle

Discover the tradition of Norman apples by learning the secrets of cider and calvados production followed by a delicious tasting. Depart from pier on a 30-minute drive to Caen's countryside and the Calvados region, known for the diversity of its landscapes from preserved coastlines to estuaries and swamps, to grasslands and pasturelands enlivened by thatched or half-timbered cottages and manor houses. Not only is it the perfect rural setting but also offers a true concentration of local Norman products such as cider or cheeses. With its love of apple in all its forms, Calvados could as well be called the capital of the apple. You will have a taste of one the most famous and traditional ways apples are used in Normandy by visiting la Ferme de Billy (Billy's Farm). On your way to the village Rots, your eyes will be drawn to the unique light creamy-yellow stones: la Pierre de Caen. This local material was used for the construction of many buildings in the area, including Caen's Abbeys. Throughout history it has even crossed seas and gained some international renown, specificaly in England but also in New York where these stones were used constructing St. Patrick's Cathedral. As you arrive at Billy's Farm, you will step into a bucolic environment so typically Norman, as you discover this cider farm's estate. From the orchards, to the distillery with its old cellars, a guided visit will take you to the backstage of calvados and cider production. After the tour, you will be invited to a little gourmet break with a tasting of some of what the farm produces with a side of charcuterie (cold meats). You will then have some free time to wander around the domain, to buy some local products in the shop, walk around the orchards, see the chapel, or meet the donkeys before heading back to the pier.
