Pretty Xlendi Bay lies on the west coast of Gozo, an island long thought to be the mythical Ogygia of Homer's Odyssey. In the story, Calypso fell in love with Odysseus and held him captive for seven years.. The reputed Calypso Cave is just one of several intriguing caves on the island. There's also Caroline's Cave, a natural grotto that was once a private swimming hole for nuns. Surprisingly for such a small island, Gozo is home to the oldest freestanding temples in the world, the Ggantija Temples, nestled among the rolling green hills. You should also visit the Citadella, a small, fortified town that houses the island's Cathedral, the Museum of Archaeology, the Folklore Museum, and the Old Prisons.

Syracuse evokes images of sunshine, blue skies, a picturesque bay, and ancient ruins of a once-great Greek city that rivaled Athens. It remains one of Sicily's most captivating destinations. Your tour begins at the Archaeological Park. Here, you'll visit the impressive Greek Theatre, dating back to the 5th century B.C.; one of the largest and best-preserved theatres of the ancient world. Nearby, see the Roman Amphitheatre from the 2nd century A.D., carved directly into the rock. You'll also explore the intriguing Ear of Dionysius; an artificial grotto shaped like an ear, renowned for its echoing acoustics, said to have been used by the tyrant Dionysius to eavesdrop on prisoners. Continue by coach to Ortigia, the historic heart of Syracuse. From the harbor, enjoy a leisurely walk through the narrow medieval and Baroque streets of the island, lined with elegant palaces, flower-filled balconies, and small squares opening to views of the Ionian Sea. Your first stop is the Arethusa Fountain, steeped in myth and considered the legendary birthplace of the city. From the nearby viewpoint, take in the beautiful Bay of Syracuse. Then, visit the Cathedral built in the 7th century over the ruins of the ancient Temple of Minerva. Several original columns remain visible, both inside and along the exterior walls. The Baroque façade and the surrounding Piazza Duomo create a striking setting filled with history and charm. The tour concludes with a walk past Piazza Archimede and the remains of the Temple of Apollo before returning to your transportation. You'll cruise along the coastline, admiring the city's beauty from the comfort of a boat, with the opportunity to explore nearby sea caves. During the summer, you'll also have a chance to take a refreshing swim directly from the boat. Your journey begins with a panoramic view of the majestic natural harbor; one of the largest in the Mediterranean. You'll sail past the ancient Italic Forum and catch a glimpse of luxurious yachts moored nearby. Look up to spot part of the striking façade of the Duomo (Cathedral of Syracuse) peeking over the rooftops. As you continue, you'll pass the enchanting Fountain of Arethusa and the impressive Maniace Castle, which marks the edge of the harbor. Venturing into open sea, you'll be treated to stunning views of Ortigia Island's colorful façades, elegant churches, and historic city walls; all even more captivating from the water. From there, we'll head toward the northern coast of Syracuse. While enjoying fresh fruit and sipping cold juice, we'll approach the caves. Weather permitting, we'll begin with a 10-minute swim stop in the crystal-clear waters. Next comes the cave exploration: first, the Cappuccini Cave, followed by the Coral Cave, and finally the Grotta Grande; (Great Cave), also known as the Cave of Stalactites. Inside, you'll see incredible natural limestone formations that have developed over centuries; details we'll reveal only once you're on board. (Please note: access to the caves is tide-dependent.) We'll also pause in front of the famous Cave of Love; a heart-shaped grotto perfect for capturing beautiful souvenir photos. Pretty Xlendi Bay lies on the west coast of Gozo, an island long thought to be the mythical Ogygia of Homer's Odyssey. In the story, Calypso fell in love with Odysseus and held him captive for seven years.. The reputed Calypso Cave is just one of several intriguing caves on the island. There's also Caroline's Cave, a natural grotto that was once a private swimming hole for nuns. Surprisingly for such a small island, Gozo is home to the oldest freestanding temples in the world, the Ggantija Temples, nestled among the rolling green hills. You should also visit the Citadella, a small, fortified town that houses the island's Cathedral, the Museum of Archaeology, the Folklore Museum, and the Old Prisons.

Gozo, Highlights of Gozo

The tour begins with a scenic drive across the island, heading toward Dwejra on the southwestern coast. This area was once home to the famous Azure Window, or "It-Tieqa" as it's called locally, a natural limestone arch formed by sea erosion over thousands of years. Sadly, in 2017, a powerful storm destroyed this iconic landmark, returning it to the sea. Next, guests will visit the Ta' Pinu Shrine, a Roman Catholic minor basilica and national shrine dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of Ta' Pinu. Located about 700 meters from the village of Gharb on Gozo, Malta's sister island, the basilica sits in the peaceful countryside, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. It holds deep national significance for the people of Gozo. The tour then proceeds to Victoria, the island's capital, where guests will explore the Citadel, also known as the "Gran Castello." Built in the 15th century by the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, the Citadel served as both a fortress and refuge for locals during attacks by Turks and Corsairs. Afterward, guests will be taken to the Ggantija Temples, an extraordinary megalithic complex. This splendid archaeological park consists of eight temples (and various other remains) built between about 510 B.C. and 430 B.C. Trapani is an attractive old port town, rediscovering its charms after years of neglect. Halfway between Europe and Tunis, it was a rich trading center throughout the early Middle Ages, then, flourished again in the 19th and early 20th centuries as a stronghold of the tuna-canning industry. After that, it went into decline, and became a salty old port. Then, it was selected to host the 2004 America's Cup and received a massive injection of cash - buildings were restored, streets in the historic center pedestrianized - giving the town and its people a new confidence. These days Trapani is a thoroughly pleasant place to hang out for a couple of days. Trapani, Marsala and Lite Lunch at Cantine Pellegrino

You will meet your guide and board your motor coach for the 1-hour drive to Marsala and spend time in the historical center. Marsala is the most western situated city in Sicily and the fifth biggest city in Sicily with 80,000 inhabitants. You will visit the picturesque city center and the Marsala Cathedral, which was built on the foundations of a preexisting Norman castle, with an organ with 4,317 pipes. Marsala is also famous for the production of excellent Marsala wines and after your walk in the city you will go to the most important winery of the region, the renowned Cantine Pellegrino to see how fortified wine is made and to taste it for yourself. To see the best of Sicily, you have to climb to great heights. And on this trip you'll do exactly that. After a short drive to the cable station, you'll take the cable car up to the top of a mountain. Take in the view out over the Trapani Salt Pans, the turquoise sea and all the way to the Egadi Islands - it's breathtaking. While you're up here, you'll explore the medieval town that is Erice. Wander the winding cobbled streets, listen to your guide give an informational talk outside the the Mother Church that's stood there for over 700 years, and admire the Castle of Venus where the son of Athena, goddess of love, built a temple in his mother's honor. And save some sighs for the gorgeous Balio Gardens in all their rainbow bright glory. Last, but not least, you'll have time to enjoy the atmosphere in Erice's tiny plaza, before you take the cable car back down to your waiting ship. Please note: The shops are open from 9:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., and closed on Sunday. If the cable car cannot be used for operational reasons, a coach will be used instead. Knees and shoulders must be covered when visiting any religious sites in Italy and since Erice is 2,467 feet above sea level, and generally chillier than Trapani it is recommended you bring a sweater or light jacket. Sorrento, Herculaneum

The city of Herculaneum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was founded around the 4th century B.C., copying the geometric regularity of the layout of Naples. Its "decumani" (main streets) have an east-west orientation, while the "cardines" (narrower streets) run north-south. There is undeniably a "feeling" about Herculaneum, quite different from Pompeii, where you get the impression that its ancient population of 5,000 packed up and left only moments ago. Herculaneum was smaller than Pompeii but is better preserved simply because, while hot ashes consumed the wood of Pompeii's buildings, Herculaneum was covered by hot mud which sealed and protected entire city blocks. This means that marble floors, mosaics, paintings and carbonized woods can still be admired today. You will discover the ancient luxurious properties and villas including the House of the Mosaic, the House of Deer, the Thermae (baths) and the House of Carbonized Furniture. In this enchanting city the past and present intersect in perfect harmony.
