You'll want to be on deck today as we transit the narrow Corinth Canal with other private yachts and Greek mail steamers. It's a shortcut reserved for petite ships like ours, and as we cruise between the narrow limestone walls we are the envy of all the ancient Romans who once portaged their ships along this very route before there was a canal.  Transit through the Corinth Canal is subject to local conditions and may occasionally be impacted by closures due to natural causes or construction activity beyond Windstar’s control. Should a closure occur, the itinerary will be updated accordingly, and booked guests will be notified as soon as information becomes available.

With 3,000 years of history, you can't turn around in Athens without encountering the past. The Acropolis, a UNESCO site, the Plaka, and the Acropolis Museum are must-sees. Board your motor coach for the 45-minute scenic drive to Monaco Rock where elevators and escalators take you up to the Old City. You will be taken on a guided walking tour up the hill and through the narrow streets, past the Oceanographic Museum, the Cathedral containing the tomb of Princess Grace and Prince Rainier and the Prince's Palace followed by some free time to explore further on your own. Next, descend from the rock and take a drive on a small part of the circuit of the Grand Prix on your way to the Casino Square. Your final stop will be Monte Carlo, where you will first walk along the Formula 1 circuit up to the Casino Square to discover the most prominent and famous building on this square - the Grand Casino, which is surrounded by the Hotel de Paris and the Cafe de Paris. Livorno, Lucca, the Fortress City & Pisa

Depart from the pier and drive to the Tuscan town, Lucca. Lucca was originally colonized by Romans and has retained its layout of a Roman military camp with its two main streets running perpendicular to one another. Coupled with a complicated system of narrow alleys and oddly-shaped squares, this was a difficult town to penetrate. Beginning in the 1550s, Lucca became an important agricultural center and experienced a renewed interest in building and infrastructure due to its population increase. Your guided tour of Lucca will start with the Piazza Anfiteatro, a Roman Ampitheater, now a public square surrounded by shops. You'll also walk along Via Fillungo, the main pedestrian street in Lucca before visiting the Basilica of San Frediano, the oldest church in Lucca, and San Michele Church, known for its intricate facade. After your walking tour, you will have free time to explore Lucca before your drive to Pisa. In Pisa you'll visit Piazza del Miracoli, a collection of four notable buildings with the most famous being the Leaning Bell Tower. Don't miss the chance to take a picture "propping up" the Leaning Tower or to enjoy an Italian gelato in a local café during your free time at this stop. Sorrento, Herculaneum

The city of Herculaneum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was founded around the 4th century B.C., copying the geometric regularity of the layout of Naples. Its "decumani" (main streets) have an east-west orientation, while the "cardines" (narrower streets) run north-south. There is undeniably a "feeling" about Herculaneum, quite different from Pompeii, where you get the impression that its ancient population of 5,000 packed up and left only moments ago. Herculaneum was smaller than Pompeii but is better preserved simply because, while hot ashes consumed the wood of Pompeii's buildings, Herculaneum was covered by hot mud which sealed and protected entire city blocks. This means that marble floors, mosaics, paintings and carbonized woods can still be admired today. You will discover the ancient luxurious properties and villas including the House of the Mosaic, the House of Deer, the Thermae (baths) and the House of Carbonized Furniture. Giardini Naxos, In the Godfathers Steps

For those with an appreciation of "The Godfather" series, many of the places visited in this tour will seem familiar. Leaving the pier by coach, you will begin with a brief drive through Messina for a 45-minute drive via the freeway and then motor along the coastal road bordered by villas, flowering gardens, and picturesque villages to reach Savoca. Its scenic beauty and historical-artistic heritage makes Savoca, one of the most attractive and unknown places of Sicily. In a private house in the village, "Bar Vitelli," houses a collection of local artisans' tools and photographs taken when Francis Ford Coppola shot scenes of "The Godfather II." After a typical refreshment begin a walking tour along the village's main street past two Churches of the 15th and 16th centuries, ( Santa Lucia and San Michele ) and to enjoy the view over the valley. Continue to Forza d'Agro, a 20-minute drive towards Taormina, a charming little village overlooking the Arab-Norman castle of Capo Sant'Alessio. In 1990, Al Pacino and Sophia Coppola arrived there to shoot scenes for the film, "The Godfather III." From the main square, a lane leads up to the circular steps, which ascend to the Gothic-Catalan portal in front of the Church of St. Agostino also known as "Triade". Giardini Naxos, Castelmola & Taormina

Founded in the 6th century B.C. by Greeks from Naples, Taormina was subsequently taken over by the Romans. Many of its narrow cobblestone streets are closed to traffic, making the main part of Taormina accessible only by foot. Your guide will take you on a guided walk that includes the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele and the bustling main street of Corso Umberto , lined with former mansions of enchanting architecture and balconies that brim with flowers. Stop briefly in the inner courtyard of the medieval Corvaja Palace and enjoy the panoramic views of the bay and snow-capped Mount Etna in the distance as you gaze from the balcony of Piazza IX Aprile. Follow your guide up the narrow street that leads to the Greco-Roman Theatre . Taormina's most famous antique dates back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries B.C. and still hosts performances today. Guests will board their coach in Taranto for a scenic 75 minute drive to Matera, known as the “town of the Sassi.” Upon arrival, guests will meet their local guide and begin a guided tour aboard an Ape Calessino (a tuk-tuk-style vehicle). The experience starts with panoramic views over the Sassi district, with several stops along the way to hear insights from the guide, capture photos, and take in the striking scenery. The first stop is in the Sasso Barisano district, offering views of the Gravina canyon. The second stop is in the Civita area, overlooking the rupestrian landscape of the Murgia, known for its ancient grottoes dating back to the Bronze Age. This is the “White Lady,” the village of Ostuni. This city was built on three hills and is famous for the striking effect of sunlight reflecting off its whitewashed houses. You will walk through narrow streets and visit beautiful examples of Apulian Romanesque architecture, including an exterior visit only of the impressive Cathedral. Fiskardo, Melissani Lake & Ouzo Tasting *

The varied landscapes of Kephalonia seem like they have been created by the hands of a dreaming god. The coastline is like a lace of sheer cliffs plunging into a turquoise sea and gentle pebbly and sandy beaches. The hinterland is a mosaic of densely forested mountains and well cultivated hills and valleys. Small villages and towns emerge from the pines and the cypress trees, topped by Venetian castles and chapels. You will drive to the village of Karavomylos where the mysterious, 40,000-year-old, underground Melissani Lake is located. During the 1953 earthquake, the cave's roof collapsed, creating amazing light displays on the cave walls. Legend says the lake is named for the nymph Melissanthe, who fell in love with Pan and drowned in the lake when he rejected her. A small boat will be waiting to take you on a breathtaking trip across its mysteriously salty, subterranean water. You will find yourself surrounded by a vast, shimmering play of blue and violet colors, created by the sun filtering through the hole in the ceiling more than 100 feet overhead. The headwater is in Argostólion, and it enters the cave by traveling across the island and through holes in the coastline. Your tour will continue to the village of Sami, for a refreshment stop for ouzo (aniseed flavored liqueur) and Greek meze at a waterfront restaurant. Please note : Wear comfortable walking shoes. It's a shortcut reserved for petite ships like ours, and as we cruise between the narrow limestone walls we are the envy of all the ancient Romans who once portaged their ships along this very route before there was a canal.  Transit through the Corinth Canal is subject to local conditions and may occasionally be impacted by closures due to natural causes or construction activity beyond Windstar’s control.
